CCC to collect garbage at night

Update : 31 Aug 2015, 07:01 PM

Chittagong authorities are set to start removing the port city’s waste and garbage during night time from today, to ensure that the city’s dwellers do not have to suffer from the nuisance of garbage trucks during the day.

Sources at the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) told the Dhaka Tribune that the move was part of incumbent Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin’s electoral pledges.

“We [using loudspeakers] requested the city’s people to dump waste between 7pm and 11pm, while our workers would collect and dump during night shifts,” Shafiqul Mannan Siddique, chief conservancy officer of the CCC, told the Dhaka Tribune.

“Along with our 70 trucks, the city corporation has rented 20 more trucks to implement the decision, while all the staffs would carry out the cleaning work together to overcome a manpower shortage”, he added.

Under the new plan, the cleaning staffs of the CCC would collect waste from 1,350 spots under 41 wards of the port city during night shifts.

Since the tenure of the last caretaker government, Chittagong city has been seeing its garbage being cleaned during 6am to 10pm. However, during the previous tenure of former mayor ABM Mohiuddin, the garbage was removed by cleaners during night.

The daytime garbage removal routine caused a public nuisance as the garbage trucks – often without roofs – had to park on the busy streets to collect garbage from roadside dustbins.

The foul odour of the waste and the haphazard parking of the garbage trucks regularly caused sufferings to commuters and created traffic gridlocks.
