Flood-affected people hit hard by erosion

Update : 28 Aug 2015, 09:21 PM

Although flood situation across the country has improved significantly, the flood affected people are now facing erosion which turns severe in Kurigram, Gaibandha Bogra and Sirajganj in last two days.

The distressed people are returning homes at most places in seven affected northern districts, they said they needed more relief to get back to their normal life.

In the last five days, over 50 families have rendered homeless at Jatrapur and Panchgachi union parishads in Kruigram. Over 100 shops of Noyarhat kitchen market, office of Rajibpur union parishad, Noyarchar Fajil Madrasa, five mosques and four educational institutions have been devoured by the Bhrahmaputra River.

Mofij Udddin, a trader at Noyarhat kitchen market, urged the Water Development Board to take immediate measures to check erosion.

Anwar Hossain, chairman of Rajibpur union parishad, told the Dhaka Tribune that one-third of his union parishad had been devoured by the river.

He: “I have contacted with the WDB, but all of my efforts went in vein.”

Mahfuzur Rahman, executive engineer of the WDB, said they had informed the higher authorities about the erosion.

He also expressed hope that possible measures would be taken to check erosion in the locality.

District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Abdul Motaleb said the government had intensified distribution of allocated rice and cash money among the flood-affected families.

In Gaibandha, flood control embankment collapsed at two points- Balua and Raghunathpur Feteullapur under Gobindaganj upazila – inundating more areas.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Gobindaganj M Abdul Hannan said 13 unions of the upazilas had been affected by the fresh inundation leaving at least 50,000 people marooned.

Standing crops, including T-Aman paddy, Aus variety and vegetables, on 2,230 hectares of land of the upazila went under flood water, the UNO said.

The UNO also said the upazila administration was distributing rice and cash money to the flood affected people particularly the poor ones to mitigate their sufferings.

Deputy Commissioner M Abdus Samad said 150 tonnes of rice and Tk4.30 lakh received from the Ministry of Relief and Disaster Management and distributed those to the flood victims of Sundarganj, Sadar, Fuchhari, Shaghata and Gobindaganj upazilas, reports BSS.

In Faridpur, a vast low lying area of nine unions of four upazilas of this district have been submerged due to further rise of water level in the Padma, Madhumati and Arial Khan Rivers. The affected upazilas are Sadar, Charbhdrasan, Sadarpur and Alfadanga.

Yesterday, major rivers were flowing below the danger mark at most points, except at seven points despite continuous fall in the water levels of the Teesta, Dharla, Ghaghot, Brahmaputra, Jamuna and other rivers during the past 24 hours till 6pm.
