UK minister for probing extrajudicial killings

Update : 25 Aug 2015, 01:53 PM

It is essential to investigate extrajudicial killings and the perpetrators should be brought to justice, said UK Minister for International Development Desmond Swayne.

"Bangladesh is a democracy and it is essential that democratic values should be preserved and maintained and that you can't tolerate extrajudicial killings," he told a press briefing.

The press briefing was held in the city  on Tuesday at the end of his three-day visit to Bangladesh.

He said it is for the government and police to ensure that those (extrajudicial killing) crimes are investigated and pursued.

Swayne came to Dhaka on Sunday and had meetings with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Foreign Minister AH MAhmood Ali, Finance Minister AMA Muhith and BRAC founder and Chairman Sir Fazle Hasan Abed.

About the arrest of British national in connection with killing bloggers, he said: "With respect to the British national who has been arrested for a grievous and heinous crime it is a fact that there are wicked people in the UK as well."

It is right that police should pursue the investigation wherever the evidence leads and if it is UK citizen who is responsible for these crimes, then he should be held accountable for it, he said.

The British minister said Britain wants to see peaceful society with strong civil society, strong institutions including the press.

"But it is not for me to lecture you and tell you how to achieve that. This is your country and your democracy and your politicians and you sort it," he said.

"If a foreign politician came to me in London and said you must do this, I should be quite rude. Equally, I am not going to come and expose myself for that by telling you how to run your government," he added.

About the sustainable development goals, he said governance was not included in the previous Millennium Development Goals.

"Its my ambition that Bangladesh having done so well on MDGs should equally be successful in achieving the strategic development goals (SDGs)," he said.

About ready-made garment pricing, he said it's rare that anyone volunteers to pay a higher price.

"But certainly people are prepared to pay higher prices for quality and I think that somewhere Bangladesh has a great deal of potential in terms of more training and greater productivity and the ability to produce for the higher end of the market," Swayne said.
