Law Minister Anisul Huq yesterday said the trial of the August 21 grenade attack case was likely to be completed by December.
He said the trial was delayed as the BNP-Jamaat alliance foiled evidence of the attack.
The minister was addressing a discussion organised by Chhatra League at the TSC of Dhaka University in memory of those who died in the 2004 attack. The discussion was chaired by Chhatra League President Saifur Rahman Shohag while the minister spoke as the chief guest.
On August 19, the prosecution of the case also said the trial would end by December.
Public Prosecutor advocate Mosharraf Hossain Kajol said it would require another four and a half months to complete the trial as 176 prosecution witnesses out of 491 had testified so far.
He said deposition of 40 more witnesses would be recorded.
The gruesome attack was made at an Awami League rally in the capital’s Bangabandhu Avenue when the BNP was in power.
A total of 24 people, including late president Zillur Rahman’s wife Ivy Rahman, died while 300 others, including party chief Sheikh Hasina who was the opposition leader at the time, were injured in the attack.
Two cases were lodged in connection with the attack - one under the explosive substances act and the other for killing people.
