Mahbubey Alam: Lawyers funding militants is alarming

Update : 20 Aug 2015, 07:57 PM

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam yesterday said that the involvement of Supreme Court lawyers in financing militant outfits was alarming.

“It will be proved in trial whether the three lawyers are guilty or not, he told reporters at his office yesterday. “No lawyers have been held over such allegations before,” he added.

About the arrest, Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Khandaker Mahbub Hossain yesterday told reporters that they did not believe the three lawyers were involved in the financing. “The bar association will not support them if the allegations are proved,” he said.

Meanwhile, a group of pro-BNP lawyers yesterday formed a human chain at the SCBA premises to protest the arrest of the lawyers.

On Tuesday, RAB claimed that Supreme Court lawyers barrister Shakila Farzana, 39 and Md Hasanuzzaman Liton, 30, and Dhaka Judge’s Court lawyer Mahfuz Chowdhury Bapon, 25, were arrested when they came out of their chamber “Law Cornerstone” on Dhanmondi 27 of the capital around 11pm.

The daughter of a former BNP whip and two of her associates, were held allegedly for providing Tk1.08 crore to hybrid militant organisation Shahid Hamza Brigade and were placed on a four-day remand on Wednesday.

Shakila is the incumbent joint general secretary of the Supreme Court wing of pro-BNP Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum. She is the daughter of Wahidul Alam, a former BNP lawmaker from Chittagong.
