Law and order situation deteriorates in port city

Update : 20 Aug 2015, 07:25 PM

Apparently it seems that law and order situation in the port city has deteriorated alarmingly with the killing of four people in a week, much to create worry among city dwellers.

Yesterday, an executive of a real estate firm was stabbed to death in Chittagong’s Bakalia area following a dispute over construction of a building in that area.

In the latest incident, Aftab Uddin Al Kader, 36, managing director of One Properties Ltd and son of Shafiq Ahmed, was murdered.

He hailed from Harisapara area under Lohagara upazila of Chittagong and used to live in Belakhan Mosque area in the city.

Bakalia police station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Mohsin told the Dhaka Tribune that a man named Saifur Rahman Siddiqui Akash, resident of the same area, stabbed Aftab.

“Akash’s father Syedur Rahman, who had a dispute with Aftab, died due to old age complications at CMCH yesterday around 1am. When Aftab came to Akash’s house to express condolence, Akash started stabbing him with a knife indiscriminately. He fled the spot leaving Aftab critically injured.

“Aftab was taken to CMCH where the doctors declared him dead,” he said. Aftab and Syedur were in a disagreement over construction of a building in a land owned by the latter, said the OC quoting Akash’s family members.

Earlier on Sunday, a construction worker was hacked to death by unknown miscreants in Kadamtali area.

On Saturday, a drug addict readymade garment worker was stabbed to death by his friend at one point of an altercation in the city’s Export Processing Zone. An accused in seven cases was slaughtered in Sagarika area on Friday following personal enmity.

Chittagong Metropolitan Police Commissioner Abdul Jalil Mandal told the Dhaka Tribune that the murders took place mostly because of personal conflicts.

“We are responding promptly to people’s calls. I think people should be more patient in handling their personal conflicts. I convene them to inform police in such cases rather than taking the law into own hands,” he said.
