Mother, daughter burnt in explosion

A woman and her daughter have sustained burn injuries allegedly from a cylinder blast at Shankharibazar in Dhaka.

Injured Lipy, 25, and her one-and-a-half years old daughter Riya, were admitted to DMCH burn unit on Thursday afternoon.

Lipi was lived with her husband Rakib at Bhigar Pashimpara area under Fatullah police station of Narayanganj.

Dr Partha Shankar Paul, resident surgeon of the burn unit, told the Dhaka Tribune that Lipy sustained 28% of injuries while Ria sustained 25% burns.

Second Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali police station Sub-Inspector SM Shakil Hasan said the fire generated from a lighter shop at a market in Kabiraj lane of Shankharibazar area around 5:30pm.

Receiving information about the incident, police sent a team to DMCH to ensure better treatment of the injured and he came at the spot to take the situation under control.

Two unit of fire service worked to douse the flame, he said.

The owner of the shop named Sadhu was remained absconding after the incident, the SI said.

Quoting locals, he said injured mother and daughter were pedestrian and got injured by the fire when they were passing by the market. But the police officials could not ascertain how could a pedestrian be injured from the fire.

Lipy only could able to say that they had there as she worked as a housemaid in a house of the area.
