40 missing after landslide in China

At least 40 people are reported missing after a landslide swept through the living quarters of a mining company on Wednesday in China's Shaanxi province.

The landslide occurred around 12.30am (local time) Wednesday, and brought about one million cubic meters of earth that buried five dorms and three houses at the Wuzhou mining company in Shanyang county, reported IANS.

Police, firefighters, mining rescuers and paramedics have rushed to the scene.

Officials said 14 people had been rescued, the operations had been greatly hampered by heavy rain.

China has seen severe weather during the current monsoon season.

The powerful Typhoon Soudelor hit southern China over the weekend bringing strong winds and rain.
