Chittagong Abahani, who are currently languishing at 10th place in the 11-team points table of the Manyavar Bangladesh Premier League, yesterday appointed experienced coach Shafiqul Islam Manik in a bid to improve their fortunes.
The port-city club, who have barely avoided relegation this season, are ready to display better and quality football in the top-flight next season.
And keeping that in mind, the officials decided to appoint Manik, who previously managed Muktijoddha SKS and Mohammedan SC.
“Our primary plan is to build a decent squad that can fight for the trophy and achieve fame in the domestic and the international arena. Our target is also to organise talent-hunt programmes in order to bring out future football stars,” the club's football committee chairman Tarafdar Mohammad Ruhul Amin told the media yesterday at BFF House.
Manik said Chittagong Abahani will be a team to watch in the upcoming season.
“After talking to the club officials, I came to realise that they want to do something for football. I took up the responsibility of building the team. I hope everyone will keep their eyes on Chittagong Abahani next season. I am also trying to bring in quality players from abroad,” said Manik.
