National Energy Security Day 2015 was observed yesterday commemorating the historic decision taken by the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1975.
Energy and Mineral Resources Division organised a seminar at Petrobangla Auditorium in the capital to mark the day.
The government has been observing the day since 2010. On August 9, 1975, Bagabandhu bought five gas fields from the then Shell Oil Company for the state.
Prime Minister’s Energy Advisor Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, State Minister for Power and Energy Nasrul Hamid, Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Energy, Power & Mineral Resources Md Tajul Islam, MP, Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission Chairman AR Khan, acting Energy Division Secretary Nazimuddin Chowdhury, Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation Chairman AM Badruddoza, Petrobangla Chairman Ishtiak Ahmed and Geological Survey of Bangladesh Director General Nihal uddin also addressed the seminar.
Petrobangla Director Quamruzzaman made a keynote presentation at the programme. In his address, Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury said Bangladesh achieved many successes ahead of its neighbours like India.
“We have achieved success in lowering child mortality and also in other sectors of human development, which Indian or some other developing nations have yet to do so,” he said.
State Minister for Power and Energy Nasrul Hamid focused on the issue of power and energy price adjustment.
He said the government has been planning to restructure the state-owned exploration company, Bapex, to strengthen its activities to increase gas production.
