The High Court has issued an order asking the incumbent committee of National Press Club not to continue its functions until further notice.
The order, given by Justice Sharif Uddin Chaklader, came Thursday after Syed Abdal Ahmed, who claimed himself as the club's general secretary, filed a petition with the court, challenging the legality of the club's incumbent committee.
On May 28, Muhammad Shafiqur Rahman was made president, and Quamrul Islam Chowdhury general secretary, of the committee after an election held extempore.
Abdal in his petition described the Shafiqur-Quamrul committee as illegal, arguing that neither of the leaders was elected in accordance with the club's constitution.
The petitioner pleaded with the court to direct the committee to stop its activities, and also claimed the committee was trying to misappropriate the money deposited by club members.
