Sheikh Kamal’s 66th birth anniversary being observed

The 66th birth anniversary of Sheikh Kamal, the eldest son of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, is being observed on Wednesday amid various programmes.

Awami League, its front organizations and different cultural and sports organisations have drawn up elaborate programmes to celebrate the birth anniversary.

On behalf of Awami League, party’s Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif paid tributes at the portrait of Sheikh Kamal at the premises of Dhanmondi Abahani Club in Dhaka at 8am.

Later, other cultural and sports organisations paid tributes to Sheikh Kamal who was one of the pioneers of modern football in Bangladesh.

Sheikh Kamal was also founder-president of the country’s leading sporting club Abahani Krira Chakra.

On the occasion, Abahani Club Limited is observing the birth anniversary of Sheikh Kamal amid various programmes.

Marking the day, a discussion meeting will be held at the premises of Dhanmondi Abahani Club at 4pm.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also elder sister of Sheikh Kamal, will attend the programme as chief guest.

Salman F Rahman, chairman of Abahani Club Limited, Lt Col Kazi Shahed Ahmed, director-in-charge of the club, will present at the programme, among others.

Meanwhile, recitation from the Holy Quran, milad-mahfil and Doa-Mahfil were held at Banani graveyard at 9am.

Moreover, Awami Swechchasebok League, Jubo League and Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote have also taken various programmes to celebrate the day.

Born on August 5, 1949 at Tungipara in Gopalganj, Sheikh Kamal, a former executive member of the central committee of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), student wing of Bangladesh Awami League, was an executive member of Jatiya Chhatra League, student wing of Bangladesh Krishak Sramik Awami League.

He took training on war-course and obtained commissioned before taking part in Bangladesh Independence War in 1971.

He was the Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to Commander-in-Chief of Bangladesh Armed Forces General Ataul Gani Osmani during the War of Liberation.

Kamal passed school secondary certificate (SSC) examination from Capital’s Shahin School and HSC from Dhaka College and later got admission into Dhaka University in Social Science department.

Sheikh Kamal faced martyrdom on August 15 in 1975 at the age of 26 while he was an examinee of Master’s Degree.
