The capital and the southeastern part of the country have experienced moderate to heavy rains for the last two days as cyclone Komen hit Noakhali coast early on Friday morning.
Persistent rains have aggravated flood situations in the southern districts while some areas in Dhaka faced waterlogging problems.
Cyclone Komen, after hitting Noakhali coast, turned into a land depression and remained there since then.
According to the Met Office, Chittagong division saw at least 838mm rainfall in 24 hours till 6pm yesterday, with Cox’s Bazar singly experiencing 208mm rainfall.
In other areas such as Chittagong, Kutubdia, Teknaf and Rangamati, rainfalls were measured at 145mm, 112mm, 90mm and 71mm in the same period. The capital, Dhaka, experienced 74mm rainfall.
Bazlur Rashid, on-duty meteorologist at the Met office, said intensity of the land depression centred over Noakhali and its adjoining areas would fall within next 24 hours or so.
The situation, under the influence of the depression, will continue to some extent across the southeastern region as well as the capital today, he added.
The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre said floods might continue in some areas of Noakhali, Feni, Chittagong, Bandarban and Cox’s Bazar in the next 24 hours.
The centre said in a bulletin three rivers in southeast and southwestern regions - Sangu, Matamuhuri and Kobadak – were flowing above danger level.
Of the three, the Sangu River in Bandrban and Dohazari points is flowing 145cm and 97cm above the danger level respectively, the Matamuhuri River at Lama and Chiringa is flowing 83cm and 136cm above the danger level and the Kobadak River in Jhikargachha is flowing 52cm above the danger level.
Besides, at least seven people died in a landslide triggered by heavy showers in the district yesterday. Of them, six were buried alive and the seventh victim died after being rescued.
In Munshiganj, at least 34 people remained missing after two sand-laden trawlers sank in the Padma River near Louhajang upazila due to strong currents and winds yesterday evening.
