Rain plays foul, second day called off

Persistent rain forced the umpires to call off play on day 2 of the second and final Test against South Africa at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka.

The umpires have made a quick call considering that the outfield won't get ready in time even if the rain stops.

Heavy rainfall likely

Under the influence of the land depression over Noakhali and adjoining area, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at places over Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal and Chittagong divisions during next 24 hours commencing 10am Friday.

Vessel movement resumes after 24 hours

The water vessel movement in all internal routers across the country has resumed on Friday as the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) lifted its embargo.

Teenage girl gang-raped in Uttara

A teenage girl has reportedly been gang-raped in the capital's Azampur area in Uttara.

The victim, aged about 17 years, works as sales girl at Rajlaxmi Market branch of departmental store Shwapno.

Cyclone Komen weakens

The Cyclonic Storm "Komen" over the northeast bay and the adjoining Bangladesh coast is likely to move in a northerly direction and may cross Chittagong coast near Sandwip by midnight, says a special weather bulletin.

Holidays cancelled for roads and highways staffs

The government has cancelled the holidays of the employees of roads and highways department in coastal districts till Saturday. The move was taken as the cyclonic storm "Komen" is likely to cross Bangladesh coast by Thursday evening.

A Bangladeshi migrant has been hacked to death by unknown miscreants in South Africa. The deceased is Md Azizur Rahman Rumel, 30, son of Md Shamsul Hoque of Paschim Maijdee village under Noakhali Sadar Upazila.

Boat capsize kills 4 in Brahmanbaria

Four people have been killed as an engine-run boat capsized in the Chheta river under Sarail upazila in Brahmanbaria. The deceased are Abdul Kahhar, 60, imam of a local mosque in Dobajail village, Shireen Akhter, 6, daughter of Ismail Mia, Fatema Akhter, 40, wife of Shiraj Mia, and their 18-month-old daughter Shefali Akhter.

Sayed Khokon announces Tk2,085.36cr budget

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has proposed a Tk2,085.36 crore budget for the 2015-16 fiscal year. The budget is almost triple the size of the revised budget for the previous fiscal year, which was Tk642.87 crore, while the proposed budget for FY2014-15 was Tk1,565crore.

Loading, unloading suspended at outer anchorage

Loading and unloading of goods at outer anchorage of Chittagong Port have remained suspended following danger singnal 7 in Chittagong and Cox's Bazar. But Loading and unloading of goods at jetty and terminal have remained limited, said Zafar Alam, a member of Chittagong port administration.
