Rough weather kills newborn on way to safety

Update : 30 Jul 2015, 02:01 PM

A Seven-day-old baby has died due to breathing complications following a stressful journey to a local cyclone shelter centre from home amid gusty wind and heavy rain.

Azmir Hossain and Morzina Begum along with their newborn baby girl Tanjina made a difficult journey to the Purbo Sonadia Cyclone Shelter Centre in the district's Hatia upazila from their house on Thursday.

The newborn fell sick due to severe respiratory distress following the tough journey amid heavy rain, said UNO Abul Hasnat Mohammad Moinuddin. “Later, she died in the afternoon due to breathing complications.”

Under the influence of cyclone Komen, squally weather is continuing over the north Bay, the adjoining coastal area of Bangladesh, and their islands and the maritime ports.

The maritime ports of Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar have been advised to keep hoisted danger signal No 7.

The coastal districts of Cox's Bazar, Chittagong, Noakhali, Laxmipur, Feni, Chandpur, Bhola, and their offshore islands and chars will come under danger signal number seven.

Maritime ports of Mongla and Payra have been advised to keep hoisted danger signal number five.

The coastal districts of Borguna, Patuakhali, Barisal Pirozpur, Jhalokathi, Bagherhat, Khulna, Satkhira and their offshore islands and chars will come under danger signal number five.

People of some upazila's under the coastal districts have been asked to leave their houses and take shelter to nearby Shelter centres.

The storm over the northeast bay and the adjoining Bangladesh coast is likely to move in a northerly direction and may cross Chittagong coast near Sandwip by Thursday midnight, says a special weather bulletin.

At 6pm on Thursday, it was centred about 50 kms southwest of Chittagong port, 105 kms northwest of Cox's Bazar port, 200 kms east-southeast of Mongla port and 125 kms southeast of Payra port.

Bangladesh Meteorological Department director Shah Alam said there are possibilities that the cyclone may let off steam with gusts of rain and become weaker upon landfall.
