A court here has sentenced life term imprisonment to 12 people for killing local Chhatra League activist Arif Hasan alias Raju about nine years ago.
The convicts are Abdur Razzak Sheikh, Hossain Sheikh, Lavlu Sheikh, Nazrul Sheikh, Abdur Sattar Sheikh, Sheikh Faroque, Shawkat Sheikh, Nuru Sheikh, Kamrul Sheikh, Ziarul Sheikh, Abdul Kader Sheikh and Sheikh Tipo Sultan.
All of them are residents of Jatrapur village in the district town.
Bagerhat Session Judge Mizanur Rahman Khan handed down the verdict Monday in presence of the convicts and acquitted three accused of the case.
Besides, the court fined them Tk10,000 each and they will have to suffer one year more in jail in case of default of the amount.
According to case briefing, the convicts brutally beaten up Raju with hammer and later strangulated him to death in a betel nut orchard in the village on September 4 in 2006.
In the incident, Raju's father Sheikh Noor Islam launched case against the 12 and the court pronounced the verdict after examining all witness and evidence.
