1 killed in Kushtia ‘gunfight’

A suspected member of an outlawed party has been killed in a “gunfight” with the police in the district's Mirpur upazila.

The deceased was identified as Palash Malitha, 28, an alleged member of Purba Bangla Communist Party (MN Laal Pataka) and resident of Amla Khamarpara in Mirpur upazila of Kushtia.

Mirpur police station OC Kazi Jalal Uddin said: “Acting on atip-off, the police conducted a drive in Bhanga Bottoil area around 1:30am Saturday while the outlawed party men taking preparation to commit robbery on the Kushtia-Meherpur road by placing logs.

“Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the criminals opened fire on them, prompting the police members to fire back.”

At one stage, Palash was caught in the line of fire and got injured, said the police official.

“However, his cohorts managed to flee. Later, the police took Palash to Mirpur upazila health complex where doctors declared him dead.”

The police also recovered a sharp weapon, a shutter gun and three rounds of bullets from the spot.
