Sirajganj-Dhaka rail link halted for four hours

Update : 24 Jul 2015, 08:16 PM

Rail communications of Sirajganj with Ishwardi and Dhaka remained suspended for four and a half hours after two bogies of a train derailed at Mahmudpur near Sirajganj Bazar yesterday morning.

Meanwhile, Senior Sub-Assistant Engineer Md Ashrafuddin was suspended while Assistant Engineer Abdus Sattar transferred for negligence on duty, said Railway West Zone General Manager Khalirul Alam.

Ahmed Hossain Masum, additional chief engineer of Bangladesh Railway, said two bogies of Dhaka-bound ‘Sirajganj Express’ train from Ishwardi veered off the tracks around 11 am, suspending train

movements of Sirajganj with Dhaka and Ishwardi.

The incident might have taken place for damage of rail slippers due to incessant rain for the last several days, railway sources said.

Rail communications on the routes resumed around 3:30pm after a salvage train removed the two bogies from the rail tracks.

Earlier, a bogie of a Dhaka-bound train derailed in the same area on Wednesday night. Besides, a bogie of ‘Sirajganj Express’ train veered off the track in the same area on Tuesday.

Frequent incidents of train derailment have created panic among the commuters of the route.

Jahurul Haque Raza, convener of the Sirajganj Sarthorokkhya Songram Porishad, demanded immediate steps for repairing the rail tracks in the district.

With this, three incidents of train derailment occurred in the same area in the last four days since Tuesday.
