21 killed in road accidents

At least 21 people were killed in accidents on roads in several districts in the last two days.

At least 16 people were killed and 60 others injured in a head-on collision between two buses on the west side of the Bangabandhu bridge on the Dhaka-Sirajganj-Rajshahi Highway early Sunday.

Our Sirajganj correspondent reported that identities of 12 of the victims, other than Minhaz Pradhan, the driver of Azad Paribahan bus, could be ascertained.

The officer-in-charge of Bangabandhu bridge west police outpost said Rangpur-bound Sabbir Hossain Paribahan from Chittagong and Dhaka-bound Azad Paribahan from Gaibandha collided head-on around 5am, leaving 12 dead on the spot. Later, four more people succumbed to their injuries at hospital.

Fire service and police personnel rushed to the spot and rescued survivors.

The injured were admitted to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital in Bogra, Sirajganj Sadar Hospital, and other hospitals and clinics in the district.

Deputy Commissioner Md Billal Hossain,  Superintendent of Police Miraz Uddin Ahmed and civil surgeon Debaprada Roy, among others, visited the spot.

“The district administration will provide Tk10,000 to the family of each victim for carrying dead bodies,” said the DC.

The accident took place as the bus of Sabir Hossain Paribahan was running on the wrong lane, SP Miraz Uddin explained.

A five-member committee led by Additional District Magistrate Muhammad Kamrul Hasan was formed to probe the accident.

In Noakhali, a trader was killed on Companiganj- Dagonbhuiyan Road in  Bashurhat Municipality of Companigonj upazila yesterday, said our correspondent.

Sajidur Rahman Sajid, officer-in-charge of Companiganj police station said the victim, Md Saiful Islam, 27, from Bashurhat, was going to his in-law’s from Companigonj Sadar around 9am by a motorcycle. When he reached Nutan Bus Stand a pick-up van dashed him from the opposite direction. Saiful received head injury and died on the spot.

Police recovered the body and sent it to Noakhali Abdul Malek Ukil Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy. Police seized the pick-up van, but the driver and helper managed to flee.

Our Natore correspondent said a lawyer was killed in an  accident in Kanaikhali area in the town on Sunday afternoon.

Deceased Abdul Mannan, 55, of Kanaikhali village was a prosecutor at the Natore Judge’s Court.

Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Sadar police station, said a motorcycle hit  Mannan when he was crossing the road around 11am. He died on the way to hospital.

According to our Madaripur correspondent: A man was killed and 30 were injured yesterday in Charbhadrason area of Shibchar upazila when a passenger bus plunged into a roadside ditch.

Witnesses said the driver of the bus for Gopalpur, Shariatpur lost control of the steering.

Locals rescued and rushed the injured to Shibchar health complex where one of them died.

In Mymensingh, three people including a father and his daughter were killed and two others injured when a bus collided head-on a car in Bagan area of Trishal yesterday afternoon, reports our correspondent.

One of the victims was identified as Azizul Islam, 40, marketing manager of Eskayef. He was on the car returning to Dhaka after Eid vacation.
