At least two people have been killed and 50 others injured in a clash between two groups of villagers in the district's Lakhai upazila.
The deceased are Kadam Ali, 50, son of Molai Mia, of Tegharia village, and Bakul Mia, 35, of Sayed Mia, of Singha village. Of the injured, 20 have been admitted to the Sadar Hospital.
Locals said fruit trader Shahjahan Mia of Singha village locked in an altercation with Molai Mia of Tegharia village over trivial matter on Sunday morning. Following the quarrel, the people of the two villages locked into a clash around the noon.
At one stage, people from six other adjacent villages joined the clash, leaving two people killed on the spot and 50 others injured.
Lakhai police station OC Mojammel Haque said: “Being informed, the police rushed in and brought the situation under control. Additional law enforcers have been deployed in the areas in order to avert further untoward situation.”
