Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Chief Asaduzzaman Miah yesterday said police had arrested over a thousand seasonal criminals in the last one month.
The criminals include fake DB police, fake RAB personnel, dope gang members, muggers, snatchers, extortionists and robbers,” the DMP commissioner said.
The drive is still on to arrest other criminals and recover illegal arms.
Asaduzzaman said this at a clothes distribution programme among poor people ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr in front of the High Court Mazar Gate.
Asaduzzaman Miah said criminal activities ahead of Eid rise and law enforcers very often find it difficult to tackle crimes as the number of criminals goes up at this time of the year.
He, however, claimed that the rate of crimes had come down significantly in recent time.
“We hope we would be able to curb crimes more efficiently in a short span of time..”
There is no society without crime. The rate is much higher in developed countries, he said.
While commenting on the deaths of 27 people in Mymensingh at a house during zakat distribution he said it is mandatory to ensure security before zakat is distributed.
People should inform police before distribution of zakat but If anything happens like that in future police will take immediate action.
Among others, Shaikh Maruf Hasan, additional commissioner (crime), Golam Faruk, additional commissioner (traffic), Bonoz Kumar Mazumder, joint commissioner (traffic) and Muntasirul Islam, deputy commissioner of media and public relation, were present at the programme.
