A group of freedom fighters have condemned the filing of yet another contempt of court petition against Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury, who is also a freedom fighter.
In a press release yesterday, 52 freedom fighters – including recipients of Bir Bikrom and Bir Protik gallantry awards – said they were shocked and appalled at the filing of another contempt of court petition against a valiant freedom fighter such as Dr Zafrullah who had dedicated his life for the welfare of others.
Signed under the banner of Amra Ronangoner Muktijoddha, the freedom fighters said the judges who had humiliated Dr Zafrullah by putting him in the same cage as the razakars – have shown their disrespect to the Liberation War.
Pointing out that Dr Zafrullah had issued a statement in support of freedom of speech and thought, the 52 signatories added that any constructive criticism of the court only strengthened the credibility of that court.
Condemning the insulting of freedom fighters under the name of trials, they added that the so-called freedom fighters who filed the case against a generous and philanthropic person such as Dr Zafrullah – have dubious motives.
The press release followed a petition filed by five individuals with the International Crimes Tribunal 2 on Monday, seeking that contempt proceedings be initiated against Zafrullah for his comments after the tribunal found the Gonoshasthaya founder guilty of contempt and imprisoned him at the courtroom for an hour.
The tribunal heard submission from the counsels of the petitioners before fixing July 12 for passing an order in this regard.
