Professor Muhammad Zafar Iqbal has resigned from all administrative posts of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST).
Zafar Iqbal sent a letter to the registrar of the university around 3pm over the issue.
In his letter, the popular science fiction writer mentioned that it would not be possible for his part to continue his administrative responsibilities under the present vice-chancellor, SUST Registrar Ishfaqul Hussain told the Dhaka Tribune.
“I have received the letter but any decision is yet to be taken over the issue.”
A total of 35 teachers of the university, including the famed author and director of the Institute of Information Technology stepped down from 37 administrative posts demanding the vice-chancellor’s resignation on April 20.
On April 13, 19 teachers got into a row with the vice-chancellor after they went to his office to discuss how to resolve problems related to the academic building’s space.
Zafar Iqbal’s wife, Dr Yasmeen Haque, was among the 19.
Physics department head Prof Dr Syed Badiuzzaman Faruque and geography department head Prof Dr Sharif Md Sharafuddin resigned in the wake of the altercation.
Mohan Muktijuddher Chetonai Udbuddho Shikkhok Forum members held a meeting and said they would step down from administrative posts unless the vice-chancellor resigned.
On the face of the protest, the VC on April 23 went on a two-month leave. He resumed office in June.
Earlier on November 27, 2013, the eminent educationalist and his wife Dr Yesmeen resigned from Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST).
Dr Yasmeen told the Dhaka Tribune that they had resigned because of a dispute over the undergraduate admission system at the university.
