Dhaka Theatre, one of the leading troupes in the country, is going to stage a special show of its acclaimed monodrama “Binodini” at the forthcoming North America Bengali Conference to be held in Houston, Texas, USA.
The three-day conference, an annual event held in the North American states, will kick off on July 10 and feature social gatherings, class reunions, film screenings, literary readings and performances dealing with Bengali culture. Dhaka Theatre will stage its production on July 11.
Directed by Nasiruddin Yousuff, the one-act play features Shimul Yousuff as Binodini Dasi, the pioneering actress of 19th century who had an outstanding contribution to shaping the theatre scene of Bengal region.
Based on the autobiography of Binodini Dasi, Saymon Zakaria scripted the play under the guidance of late drama doyen Selim Al Deen.
The play portrays the rise of Binodini Dasi as an actress, who emerged from a dark society. For over a century, she has inspired women to fight against all odds and break all barriers to make their mark on stage as actresses despite the fact that her life was never smooth and happy.
The 31st production of Dhaka Theatre, is a tribute to Binodini Dasi for her ground-breaking role establishing theatre as a profession for Bengali women theatre activists which presented in a classical narrative style mingled with Bangla theatre’s rich traditional form.
