Police shows zero tolerance for extortion in highways

To ensure hassle free, safe and smooth journey ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr police would show zero tolerance against the rampant extortion in three highways in Chittagong district.

Besides, the movements of truck, covered van and lorry, excluding the emergency items’ carrying traffic on Dhaka-Chittagong, Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar and Chittagong-Rangamati highways, will remain halted before two days of Eid-ul-Fitr, said Chittagong District’s Superintendent of Police (SP) AKM Hafiz Akhtar.

The decisions came up on Wednesday following a meeting held between the police and the transports’ owners and labours at the office of the police super at Sholoshahar Gate No 2 area in the port city.

At the meeting the SP AKM Hafiz Akhtar said a control room has already been set up to monitor hassle free smooth journey for the Eid home-goers and traffic congestion in the highways.

Police will take legal action against the extortionists in the highways whoever he is.

Excluding the emergency items, the goods-laden truck, covered van and lorry’s movements in three highways will remain halted for three days during Eid to keep smooth journey for the holiday makers and ease traffic congestion in the highways, said the police high official.

Referring an official decision of Roads and Highways, Hafiz Akhtar assured the transport owners saying that the battered roads would be repaired within the next seven days.

Mustafizur Rahaman, Additional Police Superintendent of Chittagong district, Mrinal Chowdhury, president of Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Sramik Federation of East Zone committee, Md Musa, president of Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Sramik Federation Regional Committee and Md Ziauddin, divisional engineer of Roads and Highway office in Chittagong were also present in the meeting.
