New Army chief meets President, PM

Newly appointed Chief of Army Staff General Abu Belal Muhammad Shafiul Huq met with President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday.

During the meeting with the president at Bangabhaban, Shafiul Huq expressed his gratitude to the government for appointing him as the army chief and sought the president’s cooperation in developing and modernising the army.

President Hamid hoped that Bangladesh Army would move forward further under the new army chief’s leadership and asked him to take steps so that all organisations under Sena Kalyan Sangstha could run properly and profitably.

Secretaries concerned to the President’s Office were present at the meeting.

During his meeting with Sheikh Hasina at her Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban office, the army chief sought cooperation of the prime minister in discharging his duties.

The prime minister assured the new Army chief of extending her all possible cooperation in performing his duties, and wished him success.

Earlier in the day, General Shafiul placed a wreath at the Shikha Anirban at Dhaka Cantonment paying tributes to the soldiers martyred during the Liberation War in 1971.

A smartly turned out contingent of the Armed Forces presented him with a guard of honour.

General Shafiul took over as the army chief on Thursday.
