SUST VC freed after 8 hours of confinement

The vice chancellor of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) has been Free after eight hours of confinement.

The agitating teachers of the university finally allowed VC Aminul Haque Bhuiyan to come out of his room around 4:15pm Monday.

The agitating teachers told the Dhaka Tribune that they have postponed their siege programme for Monday, considering the situation. But, it will be launched freshly on Tuesday morning.

Earlier in the day, around 50 teachers who are members of Muktijudder Chetonay Udbudho Shikhok Forum besieged the office of VC around 8:30am.

A tense situation has been prevailing on the SUST campus for several months.

The tension was generated on the SUST campus on April 13 when 19 teachers from the physics department and geography and environment department of the university went to hold a talk with the VC over space allocation between the departments on April 15.

Prof Dr Syed Badiuzzaman Faruque, head of the physics department, and Prof Dr Sharif Md Sharafuddin, head of the geography and environment science department, resigned on the same day following the alleged misconduct of the VC.

On April 20, thirty-five resigned from different administrative posts demanding the removal of Prof Aminul Haque Bhuiyan.

They are Institute of Information Technology Director Prof Dr Muhammad Jafar Iqbal, Centre for Excellence Director Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus, Public Administration Department Head Prof Dr Abdul Awal Biswas, Students Guidance and Council Director Prof Dr Anwarul Islam, acting proctor Emdadul Hoque, the assistant proctor, vehicle administrator, provosts, and assistant provosts of all the residential halls.

On April 23, Prof Aminul Haque went on a two-month leave amid protest in the university in demand of his resignation.

Earlier in the day, the VC resumed his office and while talking to the Dhaka Tribune he claimed that most of the teachers of the university supported him as “the demand of the protesting teachers were illogical.”
