The government has cancelled the order of wheat from Brazil due to its poor quality, Food Minister Advocate Quamrul Islam has said.
The minister said while making a statement under the Rule-300 of the Rules of Procedure of the House, reports BSS.
The reports of some newspapers that substandard wheat has been imported from Brazil is false and baseless, said Quamrul.
The deputy commissioners (DC) of 15 districts have already sealed off the warehouses where the wheat imported from Brazila was kept, said Quamrul.
"The sample of the wheat imported from Barzil was sent to laboratories for the testing and the test-report would be available within the next three days. Then I will talk to the Press on this issue," he told the House.
The food minister said: "There is no scope of spreading falsehood in this regard as the government decided to import wheat from Brazil following a delay in reaching 2.50 lakh metric tonnes of the food grain from Ukraine."
He said being informed about the poor quality of wheat, the authorities concerned cancelled the order of the rest of one lakh metric tonnes of wheat.
The minister said even the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed her grave concern over the issue and instructed taking necessary measures in this regard.
The issue would be cleared soon, he hoped.
