At least three people were killed and three more sustained injuries in a head-on collision between a mini truck and a pickup van in the capital’s Banani area yesterday.
The deceased were Mizanur Rahman, 32, driver of the pickup van, Arif, 22, mini truck driver and Shamim, 23, Arif’s helper.
Police, quoting witnesses, said the incident took place near the Army Stadium on the New Airport Road of Banani around 5:30am when the airport-bound pickup van collided with a Kakoli-bound mini truck.
Following the collision, the pickup van turned turtle after hitting the road divider as the driver lost control.
Six people injured in the accident were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where three of them were declared dead, said Banani Officer in-Charge Bhuiyan Mahbub Hossain.
He further added that the van was going towards the airport after dropping chicken at Karwan Bazar while the mini truck laden with sand was coming to Kakoli.
Sub-Inspector Ataur Rahman, who took the injured to the hospital said Mizanur and Shamim died around 7am while Arif died around 6:45am.
Their relatives had received their bodies and took them away for burial, he added.
The injured Selim, Ekdin and Ashik are undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Among them Ekdin was in critical condition, said the SI.
