BBS: Biological resource can add 1% of GDP

The country has produced biological resources valued more than Tk109bn, accounting for 0.81% of total GDP (gross domestic product) in fiscal year 2014, according to a survey.

Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) carried out the survey to estimate the expenditure-based GDP covering animals (cow, goat, sheep, buffalo and so on, and tea, rubber and other trees of fruits.) Meat and wooden trees are not included in the survey.    

So far, the biological resources are not included in the GDP. 

The findings of the survey will be used in next revision and rebasing of GDP.

In FY14, over Tk139bn was invested, which is 3.63% of total investment worth over Tk3.8tn in the sector.

Secretary-in-charge of Statistics and Informatics Division (SID), Ministry of Planning Kaniz Fatema released the findings at the BBS yesterday.

She said the biological resources in the private sector were not included so far.

But in line with the UN approved system of national accounts, cultivated biological resources in the private sector – this sector will have to be brought under GDP, she said.

Two more sectors – entertainment and literary and computer – will be included in the GDP as survey of the sectors were on, Fatema said.

“The findings will help achieve 7% GDP growth target in next fiscal year.”

Gross fixed capital formation (GFCF) of the sector, cow made up Tk2,847m or 84.85%, buffalo Tk405m or 12.06%, goat Tk61m or 1.81%, sheep Tk43 or 1.27%.
