SC upholds Mujaheed's death penalty
The Supreme Court has upheld the death penalty to war criminal and Jamaat-e -Islami leader Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujaheed, who had led the systematic killing of intellectuals at the fag end of the 1971 Liberation War as the chief of the notorious al-Badr death squad.
However, the apex court commuted his death penalty to life term imprisonment for killing people in Bakchar area of Faridpur in 1971. It also acquitted Mujaheed from the charge for abducting and killing Serajuddin Hossain.
Jamaat calls 24-hr nationwide hartal
Jamaat-e-Islami has called a 24-hour countrywide hartal, protesting the Supreme Court verdict that upheld the death penalty to their leader Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujaheed for war crimes during the 1971 Liberation War.
The party announced the hartal on its website on Tuesday, immediately after the verdict was handed down.
SQ Chy appeal hearing begins
The Supreme Court has commenced the hearing on the appeal filed by convicted war criminal Salauddin Quader Chowdhury, challenging his death sentence.
The four-member Appellate Division bench, led by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, started hearing the appeal of the BNP Standing Committee member on Tuesday, two-hours after the same bench upheld death penalty to Jamaat leader Mujaheed.
'Mujaheed execution on SC verdict release'
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam has said Jamaat leader Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujaheed's death sentence would be carried out on the release of the Supreme Court verdict.
Replying to a query on the execution of the verdict, he said: “The state will fix the next course of action once the copy of the full text of the verdict is released.”
Defence to file review petition
War criminal Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujaheed will file a petition, challenging the Appellate Division verdict that upheld the death penalty to the Jamaat leader.
Mujaheed’s chief lawyer Khandaker Mahbub Hossain made the statement while expressing reaction over the verdict on Tuesday morning.
Prosecution satisfied with verdict
The prosecution has expressed satisfaction with the Supreme Court judgement that upheld the death penalty to Jamaat-e-Islami leader Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujaheed.
“We are happy as the verdict fulfilled the nation’s longstanding expectation,” prosecutor Turin Afroz told reporters after the verdict was pronounced.
Sylhet sees nonstop transport strike
An indefinite transport strike has been going on in the district on Tuesday demanding a halt in reported police harassment and excess toll collection in different bridges.
Sylhet Sarak Paribahan Sramik Union, Truck and Covered Van Sramik Union and Tank-Lorry Sramik Union jointly called the strike that started from 6am.

Gonojagoron Moncho, the pro-liberation platform, has welcomed the Supreme Court judgement that upheld death penalty to Jamaat-e-Islami leader Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujaheed.
Spokesperson of a Moncho faction Imran H Sarkar expressed his satisfaction at a rally in the capital’s Shahbagh on Tuesday morning, immediately after the verdict was pronounced.
Obama invites Netanyahu for post-Iran deal talks
US President Barack Obama has invited Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for talks in Washington next month after a deadline for reaching a nuclear agreement with Iran, an Israeli newspaper reported on Tuesday, quoting State Department sources.
A spokesman for Netanyahu's office had no immediate official comment on the report. Officials speaking on condition of anonymity, however, told reporters that no such invitation had been received.
7 traffickers held in Cox's Bazar
Police have arrested seven enlisted human traffickers from Shah Porir Dwip under Teknaf upazila in Cox's Bazar.
The detainees are Shohidul Islam, 25, Jafar Alam, 27, Nazir Ahmed, 35, Jahir Ahmed, 60, Bodi Alam, 29, Forid Alam, 55, and Jaffar Alom, 52.

Indian minister: Army's importance lessened due to lack of wars
Indian Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar has said Indian Army's importance has gone down as it has not fought wars over the past 40-50 years, but was soon to clarify that he was not endorsing wars.
Parrikar made the comments at a conference on challenges and solutions regarding border safety issues in Jaipur on Sunday, reports Zee News.
