47 migrants return from Thailand

Update : 15 Jun 2015, 07:33 PM

Some 47 Bangladeshi nationals, trafficked by sea to Thailand, returned home on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight at 7:30pm yesterday.

Bangladesh’s embassy in Bangkok will interview the remaining 203 self-identified Bangladeshi migrants being processed in Thailand.

Of the returnees, ten are from Jessore, nine from Sunamganj, another nine from Sirajganj, six from Jhenaidah, two each from Narsingdi, Mymensingh, Meherpur, and Cox’s Bazar, and one each from Tangail, Faridpur, Shariatpur, Madaripur and Bogra districts, according to the Bangladesh Embassy in Thailand.

The repatriation of the 47 detained Bangladeshi nationals was sponsored by the government of Bangladesh and includes airfare, transportation from Suan Plu Immigration Detention Centre to Suvarnabhumi Airport and other expenses.

Bangladesh Ambassador Saida Muna Tasneem is working with Thai government authorities to ensure the successful repatriation of several more batches of the 197 already-verified Bangladeshis by the end of June.

Some 872 Bangladeshi nationals trafficked into Thailand have been repatriated since late 2013.

The embassy has helped to repatriate 33 Bangladeshis since the discovery of mass graves of trafficking victims along the Thailand-Malaysia border in May this year.
