With an aim to provide better and prompt services to farmers, the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) yesterday launched service centres in different upazilas.
In a pilot project, four centres have been launched in four union parishads: Barisal Sadar, Faridpur Sadar, Chougachha in Jessore, and Kalia in Narail district.
“Traditionally, agricultural extension services were delivered by sub-assistant agricultural officers [SAAO] who went to visit farmers and communities. With the introduction of agricultural extension service centres, farmers will now be able to come to the SAAOs to receive extension services, making agricultural extension services a two-way street,” said Protip Kumar Mondal, director of Planning, Project Implementation and ICT Wing of the DAE.
“This will ultimately contribute in improving national food and nutrition security,” he added while inaugurating the service centre in Barisal.
According to Anil Kumar Das, focal point of DAE, the government would expand the project in future based on the experience from these pilot centres.
