A joint eviction drives against the illegal and risky establishments at foothills have been started in Chittagong city’s Motijharna area of Lalkhan Bazar to avert possible landslide during the heavy monsoon.
Assistant Commissioner (AC) (Land) Saiful Islam of Chittagong District Administration’s Sadar Circle led the drive on Sunday in the area where a total of 35 illegal establishments were demolished.
Chittagong Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (CWASA), Fire Service officials, police, Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) and DC office land officials assisted the eviction drives.
AC Saiful Islam told Dhaka Tribune: “The drive started from 11am and continued till 2pm while 35 houses and other illegal and risky structures at the foothills were demolished”.
“Earlier we asked the people of the area through loudspeakers to evacuate the risky place where around 150 persons left the place responding to the notice”, said AC Saiful.
The water, electric and gas supply line was also cut off at the area during the drive.
It is mentioned that mainly the lower-income people have used to live at the foothills or slopes of the hills at Lalkhan Bazar in the Chittagong city with the fear of possible landslides.
A section of influential political leaders and locals have built such kind of illegal structures pushing the life into the death-risk.
According to the Chittagong DC office, at least 666 families have been dwelling risking their life at the slopes of 25 hills.
However, the AC could not tell anything about the rehabilitation of the evicted families.
