SC scraps Maya's acquittal from jail sentence

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has cancelled the High Court's acquittal to ruling party lawmaker Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya from 13 years' jail sentence in a corruption case.

The apex court also ordered fresh appeal hearing of the case.

3 UPDF men shot dead in Rangamati

Three activists of United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) have been shot dead at Bhaibonchhara in Longgadu upazila.

The deceased are Anik Chakma, Sumon Chakma, and Sujoy Chakma.

Journalist Habibur Rahman Milon passes away

Eminent journalist Habibur Rahman Milon, chairman of Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB) and also advisory editor of daily Ittefaq, has passed away. He was 78.

He died at city's Labaid Hospital around 3am Sunday.

1 held over female teacher murder in Chittagong

Detective Police have detained a person for his suspected involvement in the murder of a female teacher of Chittagong Nursing College.

The detainee is Reza.

2 killed Comilla road accident

Two people have been killed and four others injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Comilla.

Of the deceased, one was identified as Hanif, 22, of Matiyara village. He worked at a restaurant.

Detective Police have detained six people with fake notes worth Tk40 lakh from capital's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area.

The identities of the detainees could not be ascertained yet.

President, PM mourn journalist Habibur's death

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have expressed deep shock at the death of journalist Habibur Rahman Milon.

In a condolence message, the president said the country has lost a dedicated journalist. "The nation will remember his contribution to journalism."

US plans to store heavy arms in Baltic, Eastern Europe

The United States plans to store heavy military equipment in the Baltics and Eastern European nations to reassure allies made uneasy by Russian intervention in Ukraine, and to deter further aggression, a senior US official said on Saturday.

"We will pre-position significant equipment," the official said, commenting on a New York Times report that the Pentagon was poised to store battle tanks, infantry fighting vehicles and other heavy weapons for as many as 5,000 troops.
