Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Atiur Rahman has been elected as the chairman of Asian Clearing Union (ACU).
He became the boss of ACU in the 44th annual meeting of its board of directors held in Dhaka on Saturday, reports BSS.
Atiur presided over the meeting held at a city hotel attended by governors of the central bank of India, Pakistan, Iran, Nepal, Bhutan and Afghanistan and deputy governor of Sri Lanka's central bank.
Rahman took the charge from outgoing chairperson Valiollah Seif, the governor of Iran's central bank.
In his opening speech Atiur Rahman said in the recent years economic growth in the ACU region is consistently outpacing overall global growth by a good margin and ACU intraregional trade is also growing faster than global trade growth.
"These signify our region's heightening stature as a global growth hub. Inclusive approaches in development policies are helping the region's growth vibrancy to accelerate social progress in terms of human development and poverty decline," said the BB governor.
He said besides its core function of ACU intraregional trade payment settlements in a way minimising involvement of external currencies, the ACU is also a useful platform for networking and experience sharing on issues of topical interest, including macroeconomic, financial and trade policies.
