The government has imposed an additional excise duty of Tk5000 annually on deposits that exceed Tk5 crore in any banks.
Depositors will have to pay excise duty of Tk15,000 annually instead of the existing Tk10,000 if their deposits exceed Tk5 crore in any time of the year, according to an order issued by National Board of Revenue on Thursday.
However, duties on other slabs will remain unchanged.
The NBR issued the order in line with the proposed Finance Bill 2015 for amending the Excises and Salt Act, 1944 to effect the hike.
All the banks are now required to collect or deduct excise duty from all the accounts, including loan account associated with the bank as per the given slab.
Currently, customers are paying Tk150 for credit balance between Tk20,000 and Tk1 lakh, Tk500 for Tk1lakh and Tk10lakh, Tk1500 for Tk10 lakh and Tk1 crore, and Tk7500 for Tk1 crore and Tk5 crore.
With the same order, the NBR also brought changes in excise duty, which is being deducted by Airline services.
From now on, passengers will have to pay Tk1500, from the existing Tk1000, to visit Europe, USA and rest of the world excepting SAARC and other Asian countries.
The countries include-North and South America, Europe, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Taiwan, North Korea, and South Korea.
Any airlines operating in Bangladesh will have to collect the excise duty from sale of each ticket and have to deposit it to the national exchequer, as per the current law, reads the NBR order.
