Bold budget to boost growth

The government has placed a huge budget for 2015-16 fiscal year, riding on a big revenue target and bank borrowing due to poor foreign resources.

Placing the Tk2.951 trillion (Tk2,95,100 crore) budget in parliament yesterday, Finance Minister AMA Muhith estimated the GDP to grow at 7% in the next fiscal year, with a range of steps the government has taken to overcome the prevailing slow pace of private investment – largely responsible for hindering expected economic growth.

'Source tax raise to hinder RMG production'

Three top trade bodies of the country have observed that the proposed tax raise at source on exports will hamper the flow of production in garment sector.

BGMEA President Atiqul Islam made the observation in reaction to he budget that Finance Minister AMA Muhith placed in parliament on Thursday.

Army man among 4 killed in road accident

Four people, including a members of army, have been killed and six others injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a truck at Kalampur in Dhamrai, on the outskirts of Dhaka.

Of the deceased, three are identified as Obaidul Rahman, 35, of Noakhali, army official Shahidul Islam, of Satkhira and Shamsur Rahman.

Nestle withdraws Maggi in India

Food group Nestle has withdrawn Maggi instant noodles from sale in India citing "an environment of confusion for consumers", after a food scare triggered by a domestic regulator's report that some packs of the popular snack contained excess lead.

Nestle reiterated the noodles were safe. But after coming under fire in local media for doing too little, too late in response, the group said early on Friday that it would recall the product regardless, weeks after food inspectors first reported their findings.

Texas doctors do first skull and scalp transplant

Texas doctors say they have done the world's first partial skull and scalp transplant to help a man with a large head wound from cancer treatment.

MD Anderson Cancer Centre and Houston Methodist Hospital doctors announced Thursday that they did the operation on May 22 at Houston Methodist.

Ghana petrol station blaze kills 175

Some 175 people have died in a fire at a petrol station in Ghana's capital, Accra, officials say.

The fire on Wednesday night started as people in the city were trying to cope with two days of heavy rain, which has left many homeless and without power.

China ship capsize: Death toll climbs to 82

The death toll from a Chinese cruise ship that capsized on the Yangtze River has climbed to 82, state media said on Friday, as authorities righted the battered vessel and said there was no chance of finding anyone else alive.

The rescue mission has become an operation to recover hundreds of bodies from the ship, which was carrying 456 people when it overturned in a freak tornado on Monday night. Only 14 survivors have been found, including the captain.
