Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith has proposed 45% uniform tax imposition on all cigarette manufacturers.
The minister made the proposal while placing the national budget for 2015-16 fiscal in the National Parliament on Thursday.
He said: “It is well-known and universally acknowledged that cigarette is injurious both to health and environment.
“In order to avert harmful consequence of cigarette as well as to increase revenue, I propose uniform tax rate of 45% for all cigarette manufacturing entities viz. private limited, public limited or publicly traded company and for taxpayers including individual and partnership firm etc.”
Currently the publicly traded companies are paying 40% tax while non-publicly traded companies 45%.
