President, PM pay homage to Armed Forces martyrs

The President, who is also the Supreme Commander of Armed Forces, placed wreaths at the altar of Shikha Anirban in Tejgaon Old Airport area at 8am on Tuesday and stood in solemn silence for some time as a mark of respect to the martyrs. A smartly turned out contingent of the army, navy and air force presented a salute on the occasion. Later, President Abdul Hamid signed the visitors’ book on the Old Airport premises. The prime minister paid her own homage by placing a floral wreath at the Shikha Anirban (flame eternal) in the morning. After laying the wreath, she also stood in solemn silence for some times as a mark of profound respect to the memories of the martyrs, who made supreme sacrifices during the War of Liberation. Later, Sheikh Hasina, also in-charge of the Ministry of Defence, signed the visitor's book kept on the premises of Shikha Anirban. On this day during the War of Liberation in 1971, the Bangladesh Armed Forces comprising the army, navy and air force, was founded and launched an all-out attack on the Pakistani occupation forces which accelerated the victory in the conflict. After the independence of the country was won, this historic day has been observed annually as the Armed Forces Day.
