2 shot dead in Madaripur clash

Two people have been killed in a clash over establishing supremacy at Kutubpur union of Shibchar upazila in the district of Madaripur.

The deceased were identified as Ashek Matabbar, 35, and Shahjahan Darani, 40, said Shibchar OC Abdus Sattar.

The OC said the clash ensued between Ibrahim Sikder, AL leader of Kutubpur Union of the upazila and also former chairman of the union, and Atique Madabbar, the defeated chairman candidate of the union, over invitation of a marriage ceremony in the village.

On Tuesday morning, Shahjahan Darani, younger brother of Atique Madabbar, went to his shop at Abdul Jabbarkandhi Shikderkandhi village. At that time, Ibrahim Sikder and his men attacked him with firearms. Later, Atique Madabbar and his supporters joined in the clash, the police official said.

He said, at one stage, the men of two groups exchanged firearms each other, leaving Ashek Matabbar and Shahjahan Darani bullet wounded.

They were rushed to Shibchar Hospital where the on duty doctors declared them dead, the OC added.

At least six people were injured during the clash. The condition one of them, who received bullet injuries, is critical.

OC Sattar said, on information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

Additional policemen were deployed in the area immediately after the clash in a bid to avoid further clash, he further said.
