Two RMG workers have been killed in separate road accidents in Gazipur district.
Of the deceased, one was identified as Mazharul Islam, 27, son of Nasir Uddin, of Longair village and a sewing operator at Vintage Denim Limited.
The identity of the woman killed in Konabari could not be known immediately.
Factory's Quality Department Manager Mahbubur Rahman said: “A Dhaka-bound goods-laden truck knocked down Mazharul's bicycle on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway around 7:45am Tuesday.
“He died on the way to National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation known as Pongu Hospital in Dhaka,” he said.
Gazipur Industrial Police Inspector Jahangir Alam said: “The workers of the factory blockaded the highway in protest of the accident for one and a half hour, leading to a 5km traffic congestion.”
The workers took to the street and demanded construction of a flyover on the highway.
Later, police fired blank shots and tear shells to disperse the workers.
On the other hand, a female RMG worker was rrn over by a bus at Konabari in Gazipur.
Konabari highway police station Sub-Inspector Saiful Islam said: “A bus ran over the woman in front of Tushuka Garments in Polli Bidyut area around 7:30am, killing her on the spot. She was an employee of Tushuka Garments.”
He said: “Hearing the news of her death, co-workers took to the street and vandalised some vehicles on Dhaka-Tangail highway. They also blockaded the highway for half an hour.”
Later, police went to the spot and normalised the vehicular movement in the area.
