1 killed in Lakshmipur 'gunfight'

The chief of Nasir Bahini has been killed in a “gunfight” with members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Bhobaniganj area of Lakshmipur district.

The deceased is Nasir, the son of Tofael Ahmed, of Deupara village and the chief of Nasir Bahini.

Lakshmipur RAB 11 CPC 3 Captain Major Sakib Siddique said: “A team of the elite force was patrolling the Lakshmipur-Ramgoti road as usual on Monday at midnight.”

“We conducted a drive at Bhobaniganj when we noticed that Nasir and his associates were preparing for a robbery at a brick field in the area,” he said.

The RAB official said: “Sensing our presence, the robbers opened fire on us.”

In retaliation, the law enforcers fired back, leaving Nasir bullet wounded. However, Nasir's associates managed to flee the scene.

Meanwhile, police recovered two firearms and 15 rounds of ammunition from the spot.

Later, Nasir was declared dead when he was taken to Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital.

The official also said: “Nasir was an accused in 37 cases including five murder cases.”

Four RAB officials were also injured in the incident.
