Train communication with Dhaka resumes

Update : 31 May 2015, 02:11 PM

The train communication between Dhaka and the rest of the country has resumed, an hour after the gatemen at the crossings went on strike for their unpaid salaries of last four months.

The gatemen withdrew the strike at 6:30pm on Sunday after the Railway Minister Mujibul Haq assured them of making the payment.

However, they threatened that they would observe the strike Monday if the payment is further delayed.

Earlier in the day, the railway gatemen of the crossings from Tongi to Narayanganj forced the authorities to halt railway communication between capital Dhaka and the rest of the country.

The trains have remained stopped in different places since they began a strike in protest of nonpayment of salaries and allowances on Sunday afternoon.

Till filing of the report at 6:55pm, Jamuna and Titas, two passenger trains were seen standing at facing each other at the Karwan Bazar crossing in the capital.

Gatekeeper Shahin at the Karwanbazar crossing said the gatekeepers who are employed on temporary basis went to Kamalapur, where the railway headquarter is situated, to meet the authorities in demand of payment of the salaries and allowances due since February this year.

“But the authorities didn't pay heed to us,” he said, adding neither we got any assurance regarding this.

“So we, the gatekeepers at 49 crossings from Tongi to Narayanganj, have decided to go on strike from 5:30pm."
