Update : 28 May 2015, 08:05 PM

India is likely to sign three Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bangladesh to stop human trafficking, curb fake currency circulation and prevent crimes on coastal areas during the upcoming visit of Indian prime minister to Bangladesh.

The Ministry of Home Affairs is working on it. The draft of the MoUs have been prepared in several meetings held recently between the ministries concerned, confirmed a ministry source.

According to the source, DIG (Crime) of Police Headquarters and National Investigation Agency (NIA) high official will sign the MoU on behalf of their respective countries.

An initiative was taken to sign these three MoU during the ex-Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Bangladesh in 2011. But it failed. This time, the officials said, there is a strong possibility that the MoU will be singed.

The ministry sources said, An NIA delegation had visited Bangladesh recently who sat in a meeting with Bangladesh Police’s high officials and discussed about crimes and funding of trans-border militancy.

During the visit Indian delegation proposed that to prevent widespread fake currency problem both the countries would exchange intelligences, work together to increase capacity of the detectives of two countries.

They also proposed meetings in every six months among the task force members of two countries on countering the fake currencies.

The high officials of both countries in the meeting traded information. Indian currencies are being faked in Pakistan and the offenders are using Bangladesh to push the currencies into the

Indian market through Bangladesh as transit, they said.

The meeting emphasised on signing a MoU to prevent the flow of fake currencies.

In February this year the topic was also discussed in the home secretary level meeting between two countries.
