Shillong police yesterday took BNP leader Salahuddin Ahmed into their custody after he was discharged by the Neigrihms Hospital authorities.
The BNP joint secretary general may be produced before a local court today or tomorrow, said Meghalaya state police.
Bhaskar Bargohayen, a doctor at the Neigrihms, told reporters that Salahuddin had been discharged as his physical condition got stable.
The BNP leader went missing in Dhaka on March 10 and reappeared in Shillong on May 11. Right after he disappeared, his wife Hasina Ahmed alleged that he had been picked up by Bangladeshi law enforcers.
Salahuddin has recently said that he does not remember much of what happened to him after March 10. Police in Meghalaya lodged a case against the BNP leader for entering India without legal documents.
He was shifted to the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (Neigrihms) from the Meghalaya Civil Hospital for better treatment.
However, the BNP has claimed that Salahuddin was still very sick.
At a press conference in the Nayapaltan office yesterday, Abdul Latif Jony, assistant office secretary of the party, said: “Salahuddin Ahmed is still sick. He has kidney and skin problems. Apart from these, eight months ago, he took treatments for cardiac problems.”
Since Salahuddin reappeared two weeks ago, this is the first time that his party has come up such a statement at a press briefing at their Nayapaltan office.
Asked about Salahuddin’s treatment, Jony said: “Doctors did not say anything about the patient’s treatment there. Doctors told Salahuddin’s wife not to worry as taking care of him was their responsibility.”
Regarding Salahuddin’s treatment in Singapore, the BNP leader said: “Salahuddin generally goes to Singapore for medical treatment. That was why his wife had talked about taking him to the third country. But the Indian court will decide where he will be given treatment – whether it will be outside or inside India.”
Jony had been to Shillong and had met Salahuddin there.
