Twenty-two drug-addicts, who were undergoing treatment at a drug addict rehabilitation centre in Barisal city's C&B Road area, have fled from it.
Three staff of the rehabilitation centre, Holy Care Centre for Treatment and Rehabilitation of Drug Addicts, sustained injuries while trying to obstruct the drug addicts.
One of the injured staff members, Sabuj Chandra, said the patients suddenly became furious and attacked us on Tuesday morning while we were serving breakfast, leaving three of us injured.
Later, 22 drug addicts, out of 30, fled the rehabilitation home, breaking open the grill of the central kitchen located on the ground floor, added Sabuj.
Sabuj and another colleague have been admitted to Barisal Sher-E-Bangla Medical College Hospital.
Mustafizur Rahman Sumon, director of the centre, told the Dhaka Tribune: “Five patients returned a few hours after the incident.
“We informed the police and the relatives of the patients immediately after the incident happened.”
While talking to journalists, the authorities and the patients claimed that drug addicts Manik and Kabir made the plan to flee the centre.
Shakhawat Hossain, Barisal Kotwali police station OC, visited the centre and said a General Diary has been filed in this connection.
Police were searching for the fleeing drug addicts and were investigating the matter, he said.
“Primarily, we suspect that the drug addicts might have fled the rehab home because of poor accommodation facilities, extremely hot weather, a painful treatment system and misbehaviour of the staff,” added the OC.
