Nearly 200 shops have been burnt in a fire that broke out at a market in Municipal Market area under Barguna sadar upzila.
The fire originated from an electric short circuit at a shop and soon engulfed the nearby shops of the market around 10:15pm Monday.
Meanwhile, ten fire fighters were injured during their efforts to douse the fire.
Barguna Fire Service Deputy Assistant Director Monoranjan Sarkar said: “On information, two units from from Bagerhat and Amtoli went to the spot and doused the blaze around 2:30am Tuesday.”
Barguna municipal mayor Shahadat Hossain said: “There are more than 500 shops in the market. The fire has gutted nearly 200 shops including a restaurant, district cable operators' control room, garments warehouse.”
The estimated loss from the fire was TK5 crore, he added.
