Chasing away the germs

Update : 25 May 2015, 01:28 PM

If anyone caught a cold in the house, it is quite possible that multiple members of the family have also caught it, and while it is great for family members to spend all day together in bed, being sick actually takes its toll on most of you. Therefore, when the storm’s over, it is time to start cleaning up the house so you can avoid catching it soon all over again. The sneezing fits and the blocked nose on those long nights may otherwise come back again.

Bedding

Ironically, when you have the flu, you normally tend to spend a lot of time sweating in bed. So, if it’s possible, place an extra layer of sheet between the person and the mattress so the mattress is well-protected from those germs. When the flu is over, clean the bed sheets in hot water and replace them with new ones.

Points of contact (eg switch boards, remote gears, door knobs, etc.)

It goes without saying that these points are used at least 10 times a day, with our hands that are then laden with creepy-looking cold virus and bacteria. Clean them with soap and hot water once you’ve recovered so you don’t catch the same flu from those places again.

Airing out

No matter what the weather is like, try to air out the house as much as you can. Some fresh air would do you good if you’re just recovering.

Bathrooms

Now this might just be one of the most important items on this list. First, wash all the clothes that you might keep in the bathroom like towels and bath robes. Then, it is time for you to disinfect the counter tops, garbage cans and toilet seats and if you want to go around a bender, soak your toothbrush in hydrogen peroxide to kill any remaining bacteria in it.

Kitchen

This may not be your hotspot when you’re ill, but this sacred room definitely gets used a lot and hence needs to be cleaned with just the same amount of dedication. Wipe out the points of contact like the fridge handles, stove tops, counter tops and other doorknobs in the room.

Sick clothing

After you’ve recovered, soak your sick clothes in really hot water and clean them thoroughly.

Tissue papers

Keep all those paper towels away in the garbage can; they’re your biggest enemies.

Get well soon!
