Five killed as nor’wester hits Dinajpur, Joypurhat

At least five people were killed and 50 others injured as a nor’wester swept over Dinajpur and Joypurhat districts early yesterday.

In Dinajpur, four people, including two of a family, were killed and 50 others injured as the violent storm hit four upazilas of the district.

The deceased were identified as Mitu Roy, 22, wife of Mukul Chand Roy of Khayerpukur village in Phulbari upazila, Sirajul Islam, 60, his grandson Sabbir, 8, of Hatishal village in Nababganj uapzila and

Aleya Begum, 65, wife of late Sabet Ali of Kamarpara village in Chirirbandar uapzila.

Besides, several hundred houses were damaged and thousand of trees uprooted during the storm in Phulbari, Nababganj, Chirirbandar and Sadar upazilas of the district.

Power supply to different villages under Sadar upazila got snapped as a number of electric poles were uprooted by the storm, reports UNB.

Vehicular movement on Dinajpur-Dhaka highway remained suspended for several hours as trees fell on the highway during the storm.

Deputy Commissioner Ahmed Shamim Al Razi confirmed the death of four people.

In Joypurhat, Jahidul,37, son of Naser Uddin, a resident of Gaibandha district, was killed and 12 people were injured as a nor’weste lashed several upazilas of the district.

Witnesses said Jahidul died on the spot as a wall of his house fell on him during the storm at about 1:30 am.

Besides, the storm damaged a huge number of houses, paddy fields and uprooted trees and electric poles, snapping power supply in five upazilas of the district.

Meanwhile, 20 people were injured and three thousand houses were damaged during the storm that lashed in Nilphamari district on Saturday night, said Magura union parishad chairman Ataur Rahman of Kishoreganj upaizla of the district.

Besides, around 150 thatched houses were damaged and four hundred trees were uprooted when a nor’wester hit five unions of Sadar upazila in Lakshmipur district on Saturday night.
